IESE Business School has selected WiHood from hundreds of social entrepreneur companies in Europe to speak at the 2010 IESE Business School "Doing Good and Doing Well" Conference on Responsible Business.
I have been asked to speak at two sessions which include a round-table format which I like very much because of the spontaneity of the questions and the pressure.
I am honored to have been chosen to speak at such a prestigious Business School and event. There are many social entrepreneur events in Europe but many of them are in a format to appeal to corporations or agencies for funds. This conference is to provide these top students the opportunity to ask the difficult questions to the CEOs of those companies so that they understand the implications of the challenges that arise for all social entrepreneurs. A great idea!
This 7th annual conference takes place from Feburary 26-27, 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.
I hope to see you there...

Why Google's Voice strategy required the acquisition of Gizmo5
For many years, Google avoided involving itself in the VoIP industry. It was courted by every major and minor VoIP player at conferences, meetings, anywhere Google showed up. Google discounted the value of VoIP and thought VoIP was all about voice and billing minutes. After its acquisition of Grand Central, Google finally started listening to the underlying layer of VoIP, the protocols and signaling that powers VoIP. It began to make sense to them.
The strategic importance of Google Voice has increased exponentially and continues to do so because "voice" is the connecting bridge between all people. By having a "voice" strategy that reinforced its advertising strategy, Google would be in a even more powerful position then without.
The acquisition of Gizmo5 was to acquire the needed SIP knowledge that can only be obtained from the individuals who have been involved in the SIP standards and interrop wars for the past 10 years. The Gizmo5 people will be able to connect Google Voice to any web service or make it available on the simplest API for integration into future applications.
The Gizmo5 acquisition was not about a voice application. Gizmo5 application has always been unreliable and prone to bugs but it ability to interrop with other SIP networks was world class.
Google Voice is a much bigger strategy then people realize. What is the value of connecting you, your habits, your location, your availability, your frequency, your devices all into a single service?...Now, you can begin to understand the strategy behind Google Voice and its acquisition of Gizmo5.

Flair Business magazine article on WiHood
Flair Business magazine (Norway) wrote a great article (in Norwegian) about WiHood's benefit to students and aid organizations.
The article includes pictures of AIDS orphans in Kenya that are getting a modern education and a future of possibilities through the use of their WiHood PCs.

Avoid Venture Capitolist at all costs!
These days during the global financial crisis are very difficult, especially if you have a young company or idea that needs funding. Don't follow the path of previous startups and kiss up to Venture Capitalist. Their job is to make money off of you, that's their main and only focus. The free coffee and donuts every time you meet them is a smoke screen.
Read the story about the Zappos sale to Amazon.com and how a experienced entrepreneur was forced to sell his incredible company at a price he wasn't able to influence because the VCs controlled the ability to sell the company whenever and to whomever.
Find another way, a way that has not succeded or been tried before. Believe that your new idea in finding money for your company is better then any VC can ever help you to achieve.
Use Twitter, Facebook, and follow trends. Leverage you passion and create a community around what you love and have that community love you back. BUT don't go to a VC!
